Homeland Security completes e-passport test at San Francisco International Airport

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has finished a three-month test at the San Francisco International Airport to evaluate the ability of RFID interrogators to read RFID inlays embedded in passports, known as e-passports. These interrogators must be rolled out by Oct. 26. All the visitors from the 27 countries in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) will have to carry e-passports and the ports of entry will have to be RFID-enabled. These e-passports will hold biographic and biometric information. The DHS is planning to use the test results to help them decide which inlays to use for the e-passports it plans to issue to U.S. citizens starting in later this year or early next year.

ID database will become national population register

The UK government says their ID card database will become a national population register. It will contain personal information to verify identity, and they also want to create a children's register as well. The adult population register will containing a person's name, address, date of birth and a unique ID reference number. The cut-off age is 16.

Sprint users can track children via GPS
Sprint Nextel has become the first U.S. wireless provider to sell equipment to track children using the global positioning system. Parents will be able to track up to four cellphones using the Internet or on their own wireless device. Alerts can also be set that will warn parents when their children aren’t where they are supposed to be. Dan Gilmartin, Sprint's marketing manager, said the service could also let adults keep track of elderly parents.

Debit card retail spending outstrips cash spending for first time
Last year, debit cards accounted for 37% of all retail spending, ahead of cash at 34% in the UK. The debit card use was up by nine percent from 2004.
